It is the small things and incidents that kind of make us refer to T.I.A. All those odd things that would never happen back home but that happens here every day, all the things people say or do, all the things we see, all the things we experience. It can only be described as T.I.A. T.I.A, T.I.A ?
Like for instance, Tui and me went to Accra today and while at an ATM machine following scene takes place:
A police officer with a big machinegun comes up to us and asks: which one of you like me?
Tui and me looks at each other with the “what the f*** does he mean” look upon our faces.
Police officer: Which one of you wants me?
Me: What do you mean wants you?
Police officer: One of you has to like me yes? Do you like me? How about your sister? Does she like me? Who wants me?
Tui: The giraffe likes you (she bought a wooden giraffe that she sent home by post today)
Me: You can’t just go up to someone and ask them if they like you or wants you…
Police officer: Hahaha, do you like me? Yes?
Tui: Yeah we like you but not that way…?!?
Me: I got a boyfriend…sorry…(my standard reply these days when strange men wants to talk to me. Either that or I will tell them that my mother has forbidden me to talk to strangers lol)
The police officer turns to Tui and asks: So you like me then?
Tui: My giraffe likes you…anyways we need to go to the post office…
Policeman looks at us and burst in to laughter: but this is not the post office, it is the ATM…hahahah
Me: Yeah, dude…we know that…need money before we go to the post office…haha…
Police-officer: Hahaha, you like me…hahaha…
Both me and Tui burst into laughter and then we left him there…I did not realize until after that he had a big machinegun and got a bit worried as we just turned down a police officer with a gun lol. But yeah, one of the many encounters that we experience here on a daily basis ?
Oh…and today I got called yellow woman… Yellow woman? What the f***?!? White woman? Sure! But yellow? Come on…and nowadays whenever people calls me obruni or shout obruni a me I will shout black woman/man back at them, makes them all laugh though ? And some of the pick-up lines the guys on camps linger out when I pass them in the street…OH MY GOD…” I love your shoes man”… I love your shoes? I wear cheap plastic/rubber thongs (flip flops) worth less than 2 dollars!!! I love your shoes??? Come on…can they not do better than that? And then of course: “whazzzzzz up maaaaan? Looking goooood…beautiful giiiiirllllzzzz…sister…I like yuuuuuuuuu”, and so it continues. Michelle got worse though. While walking down the 18, which is the main street on camp, some guy screamed for her to take her clothes off lol. Some of the guys here really cracks me up, but at least they try and I guess that’s half the fun – I sure get many good laughs lol ?
Anyways, T.I.A or not, life is good here. I enjoy every single day spent on camp and I really feel like home here now. Work is great and I still find my self continuing to say yes to do more and start new projects. I still go to dance class Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays (only 2 weeks left to our dance show lol, I promise you it will be AWESOME), and on Wednesdays and Thursdays I have drum class! I am so happy that I’ve taken up the drumming again. I do not understand how I could ever stop playing drums!?! I love it! I love it, I love it, I LOVE IT!!! So by next week I will have my own djembe to practise on and bring with me home to continue to play – FANTASTIC ?
Oh…maybe I should tell you all that I have applied for several jobs back home (mostly in Oslo, but also in Umeå and some other places in Sweden + Copenhagen (guess I consider Scandinavia to be home, or like I say; wherever I am is my home ?)) so it might be that I turn up back home sooner than you expected. If not I will follow my original plan, which is to be in India until April, but I will for sure keep you posted about my always-changing plans lol ?
From Africa with love,
T
Du är så himla modig, Trine. Önskar att lite av det skulle skvätta över. 🙂
